Introduction to Gender Distress with Pamela Garfield-Jaeger, LCSW

This course offers a critical examination of the current approaches to treating gender dysphoria, particularly in youth, and presents alternative perspectives not commonly discussed in mainstream clinical training. Designed for mental health professionals, the course explores the rise in transgender identification among adolescents, potential psychosocial contributors (such as trauma, autism, and social influences), and the ethical implications of the gender-affirming care model.
Through a combination of clinical insights, developmental theory, and firsthand accounts from detransitioners, participants will learn to assess gender-related distress with a more exploratory and individualized therapeutic lens. The course also highlights the lack of scientific consensus on treatment, the emotional and physical harms reported by some individuals, and resources for families seeking supportive care outside of the affirming model.

Also included in the course:

  • Explore the Hidden Impacts of Pronoun Use on Youth
  • A Clinical Conversation Starter for Trans-Identifying Youth
  • Preferred Pronouns Are Harming Kids - an Interview with Pamela Garfield-Jaeger, LCSW
