What if your private practice is full, your caseload feels manageable, and yet you still feel called to create something more?
Not because you’re burned out.
Not because you dislike clinical work.
But because you’re ready for a new challenge, more flexibility, and a way to help more people without adding more one-on-one hours.
In this episode of The Therapy Show with Lisa Mustard, I sat down with Carolyn Robistow, founder of The Scalable Therapist, to talk about how therapists can expand beyond the traditional therapy model and begin building one-to-many offers.
This conversation was packed with practical ideas and inspiration for therapists who are ready to grow in a new direction.

When Your Practice Is Good — But You Want Something Different
One of the most powerful takeaways from this conversation is the reminder that you do not need to be miserable in your current work to want something new.
Sometimes your private practice is going well.
Your schedule is where you want it.
You enjoy the work.
And still, there is a creative itch for something different.
Carolyn describes this beautifully as wanting life to be good in a different way.
That really resonated with me.
For me, that looked like creating Podcourses and continuing education on the go — a one-to-many model that allows therapists to earn CE credits while walking, commuting, or cooking dinner.
For others, it might look like:
-
group therapy
-
group coaching
-
workshops
-
memberships
-
digital courses
-
self-paced challenges
-
niche support communities
The beauty is that there is no one right container.
Start with the Problem, Not the Program
One of the most valuable points Carolyn shared is that many therapists make the mistake of building the entire offer before they know whether the market wants it.
We start by outlining modules.
Designing worksheets.
Creating branding.
Building websites.
But what if we started somewhere simpler?
Carolyn encourages therapists to begin with one question:
What problem am I helping solve?
This is where clarity starts.
Instead of obsessing over the container, focus first on the experience your audience is having and the outcome they want.
This approach allows your ideal audience to naturally reveal themselves.
That mirrors my own experience building my CE business.
The idea came first.
The exact structure came later.
I knew I wanted to create continuing education through podcasting before I knew exactly what the first Podcourse would be.
That clarity came from listening to what therapists actually needed.
There Are Many Ways to Scale Your Expertise
One thing I loved about this conversation is that Carolyn reminds us that scaling doesn’t only mean running live groups.
A one-to-many offer can take many forms.
Examples from her students include:
-
communities for pre-licensed clinicians
-
support spaces for Black women expats
-
ADHD decluttering programs
-
relationship workshops
-
creative therapy-based group experiences
This is where your expertise, interests, and creativity come together.
Your next offer should reflect your voice and the unique way you help people.
That’s what makes it sustainable.
Why Therapists Need More Scalable Options
I truly believe therapists need more options for sustainable work.
The traditional one-to-one model can be deeply meaningful.
But it doesn’t have to be the only way.
Scalable offers allow therapists to:
-
diversify income
-
create flexibility
-
reach more people
-
reduce dependence on session hours
-
build long-term sustainability
This is especially important for therapists who are asking:
-
What’s next for me professionally?
-
How do I grow without seeing more clients?
-
How can I create a new challenge for myself?
If those questions are on your mind, this episode is definitely worth a listen.
Final Thoughts
This conversation with Carolyn Robistow was such an encouraging reminder that growth doesn’t always mean doing more.
Sometimes it means doing things differently.
If you’ve been feeling pulled toward creating something beyond the traditional therapy room, I hope this episode inspires you to start exploring what that could look like.
