Why I Started My Podcast: A Journey to More Convenient, On-the-Go Learning for Therapists
By Lisa Mustard, Licensed Therapist and Life Coach
As a therapist and coach, I'm passionate about personal and professional growth, not just for myself but for others in the mental health community as well. But like many therapists, I was feeling burned out by the traditional methods of continuing education. Sitting in front of a computer for hours on end or being stuck in a meeting room watching a presenter, was draining. I longed for a more convenient way to learn—something I could fit into my busy life while staying engaged and inspired.
The Moment That Sparked My Podcasting Journey
The idea for my podcast came to me during a pivotal moment at the Lowcountry Mental Health Conference in Charleston in 2018. As I sat among the attendees, I noticed a clear generational divide in how people engaged with the content. Some were glued to their screens, while others, like me, seemed tired of the traditional, static approach to learning. That’s when I began to wonder: Why isn’t there a more flexible, portable way to access continuing education (CE) courses? Why couldn’t I learn while taking a walk, commuting, or running errands?
This realization, combined with my own desire to reignite my passion for therapy, inspired me to start something new. I envisioned a platform where therapists could not only meet their CE requirements but do so in a way that fit seamlessly into their lives—no more sitting in front of a screen for hours. I wanted to get outside, pop in my earbuds, and learn while I moved. And I knew I wasn’t alone.
The Birth of My Podcast
With that inspiration in mind, I launched my podcast with a simple goal: to offer therapists a more modern, accessible way to grow professionally. My podcast allows therapists to earn continuing education credits while on the go, making learning something you can do while commuting, exercising, or simply taking a break from the confines of your desk. This format not only saves time but also keeps you engaged in a way that traditional learning environments often fail to do.
Opportunities and Challenges Along the Way
Starting this podcast has opened up incredible opportunities for me. It’s allowed me to reach therapists nationwide who are looking for flexible ways to meet their CE requirements. Through the podcast, I’ve been able to offer Podcourses—an innovative format that blends professional development with an easy-to-consume, on-demand audio experience. I’ve also had the chance to collaborate with amazing experts in the field, building a network that continues to inspire me and add value to the show.
Of course, there have been challenges as well. Offering Podcourses that count toward CE credits requires me to meet strict educational standards, ensuring every episode not only engages but educates. Balancing podcasting with my work as a therapist requires strong time management, and standing out in a crowded podcasting market is no easy feat. But these challenges are well worth it when I hear from therapists who tell me how much they appreciate having a learning format that works with their busy lives.
Looking Ahead
I’m excited to continue growing my podcast and providing a valuable resource for therapists who, like me, are looking for more convenient, on-the-go learning opportunities. Whether you're commuting, walking, or just need a break from the screen, my goal is to make learning accessible, engaging, and flexible. Thank you for being a part of this journey with me—I can’t wait to see what’s next!
